Karachi Launches Pakistan’s First Large-Scale Public Air Quality Display Initiative

Climate Action Center, with the support of Murtaza Wahab, Mayor of Karachi, officially launched Karachi’s city-wide Air Quality Display Initiative — the first initiative of its kind in Pakistan aimed at making air-quality information publicly accessible on a large scale.
Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab inaugurated more than 100 Air Quality Displays installed across Karachi, positioning the city among leading global cities providing air-quality information to citizens through outdoor public screens.
The initiative uses a simple colour-coded system that enables citizens to understand air-pollution levels quickly and take relevant health precautions.
A public-health signal for the city
Speaking at the launch, Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab said the city is working towards environmentally friendly interventions and encouraging private-sector companies and international organisations to support these efforts through CSR contributions.
He described air pollution as a serious issue for Karachi and highlighted the role of vehicles, the power sector and industry, particularly during winter months when reduced air movement can worsen conditions.
The Mayor emphasised that public air-quality displays help citizens become aware of the air they are breathing and take precautions. He called for collective action beyond politics to build a healthier future for Karachi.
Collaboration and public access
The initiative is a collaborative effort between Karachi Metropolitan Corporation and Climate Action Center, reflecting a shared commitment to environmental awareness, public health and climate resilience in Karachi.
The launch event was attended by representatives from government, civil society, environmental organisations and the media.
